A Time of Tranquil Water

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS RELAXING OIL PAINTING “A TIME OF TRANQUIL WATER”:

The Green River begins in Wyoming and winds its way through Utah and Colorado. I did the first watercolor sketch of “A Time of Tranquil Water” on the spot in Dinosaur National Monument in northeastern Utah. (Colorado lies just a few miles to the east, and a large portion of the monument is located there, too.) I took that small work and a good set of photos back to my home studio and created this larger, more-polished version in oil paints.

Past, present and future show up here. From my spot on the river’s edge, it was clear that it had raged through this spot many times, creating a cave and other fissures in the rock.

On the day I painted “A Time of Tranquil Water,” the Green River truly was tranquil. And so, not surprisingly, given the lovely location, was I.
