It was an early snow, even for the Colorado Rockies. This mid-September day in the Uncompahgre National Forest, not far from the old mining town of Ouray, offered treats for the eye everywhere we looked. The autumn colors were especially lovely when contrasted with that fresh coat of white.
This particular stand of yellow aspens glowing above the snow-covered rocks beneath them provided a subject I couldn’t resist painting on the spot.
My plein air (outdoor) study and some good photos gave me the reference material I needed for this final watercolor, which I painted in my studio in Santa Fe.
The original painting was sold to a private collector by an art gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
