Bosque del Apache Early Color

Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico, south of Albuquerque, is a haven for birds and for bird watchers and artists. The wetlands attract huge flocks of wintering cranes and geese and, throughout the year, waterfowl, shorebirds, and birds of prey.

While the wetlands have their own serene splendor, the land areas surrounding the water are beautiful, too. On this trip, one of many I’ve made to the refuge, the autumn color was just beginning to emerge. That early color inspired the painting shown.
