Canyon de Chelly Autumn

Located in northeast Arizona within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation, Canyon de Chelly National Monument is a spectacular place any time of year. But the canyon is especially beautiful in autumn when the cottonwoods along the Chinle River glow with color.

Although the river is shallow, and even a dry bed in places, the trees along its course are evidence of the river’s occasional abundance, which for centuries has sustained life, including the Anasazi (ancient pueblo people) and the Navajo. Despite its out-of-the-way location, Canyon de Chelly is one of our most visited national monuments.
