Canyon de Chelly Colorations

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS STRIKING OIL PAINTING “CANYON DE CHELLY COLORATIONS”:

“Canyon de Chelly Colorations” is a unique view of Canyon de Chelly National Monument. It’s located within the boundaries of the Navajo tribal land in northeast Arizona. This magnificent national monument may be located in an unusual spot, but it offers amazing historic and visual sights.

On this visit, Martha and I took the famous “shake and bake” tour, so called because it’s a rough ride in and out of the Chinle River, over and over again, on a flatbed truck. People who do it in summer have been known to bake. We did it in early November, so we didn’t bake.We did do a whole lot of shaking, however.

The timing was perfect for our purposes, which for me was all about making gorgeous art like “Canyon de Chelly Colorations.” For Martha, it was all about making gorgeous photographs.

The autumn color along the Chinle River, with its variety of shapes and colors in the sheer cliff walls, gave me a strong backdrop for this composition. I used overlapping shapes, foreground details, warm and cool colors to create a sense of depth.
