Spring in Cochise Stronghold

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS STRIKING OIL PAINTING “SPRING IN COCHISE STRONGHOLD”:

“Spring in Cochise Stronghold” is a real place in Arizona’s Dragoon Mountains. This beautiful woodland area lies in a protective rampart of granite domes and sheer cliffs that were once the refuge of the great Apache Chief Cochise, his fellow warriors and their families.

It’s a perfect example of how Native American people lived in harmony with the natural world before they lost their land to invaders.

Martha and I saw “Spring in Cochise Stronghold” in person when we camped there one April. The flowering trees in the foreground, with their delicate bright blossoms, provided an interesting contrast with the rugged brown hills in the background. I did my usual watercolor sketches and took lots of photos, then brought it all together in the studio.
