Ghost Ranch Landmarks
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS “GHOST RANCH LANDMARKS” OIL PAINTING FROM GEORGIA O’KEEFFE COUNTRY:
“Ghost Ranch Landmarks” is the result of many hikes I’ve made around and through Georgia’s O’Keeffe’s famous Ghost Ranch in northern New Mexico. The multicolored rock formations, canyons, cliffs, and plains offer a range of opportunities to the artist and physical challenges to the hiker.
In “Ghost Ranch Landmarks,” a montage-style painting, I set out to capture some of Ghost Ranch’s most appealing natural and man-made features in a single fantastic composition. I pulled together elements from different part of O’Keeffe’s property. The result is a classic example of artistic licence. I like it and hope others will too.
And yes, it is fantastic — and fantastical — in many ways, although most of what you see here actually is there on location. I may have punched the color just a wee bit, but that was just the artist in me coming out. And hey, if punching the colors was good enough for O’Keeffe, it’s good enough for me too.
