Monument Valley Monoliths

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS HUGE PANORAMIC OIL PAINTING “MONUMENT VALLEY MONOLITHS”:

“Monument Valley Monoliths” was an interesting and challenging oil painting for me. To start, it’s one of the largest I ever made. And I was determined to stylize it a bit, to keep it from being just the usual landscape painting. I’m proud and happy with the striking result.

Monument Valley Tribal Park offers a unique perspective on time. The mysterious “ancestor people” often called the Anasazi abandoned the area in the 1300’s, leaving it empty of humans until the arrival of the Navajo, who call themselves the Dine.

This remarkable landscape is found on Dine tribal land. Unlike what many tourists assume, Monument Valley is not a national park or monument.

In “Monument Valley Monoliths,” I combined multiple perspectives to convey the enduring quality of this icon of the American West with its pinnacles of rock surrounded by miles of mesas, buttes and windblown sand colored with the reds of iron oxide.
