New Mexico Summer

This family home is classic New Mexico style. Traditional touches include the adobe construction, the blue-painted window frame, the vigas (beams) extending from the walls, the ristras (strings of dried chiles) hanging under the portal, and the expansive front garden bursting with color.

This actual house and garden are located in an orchard area near the town of Velarde, which was founded in 1598. The ancestors of the people currently living there have farmed this land for 400 years. Their irrigation water comes from the nearby Río Grande, delivered to the orchard by acequias (irrigation ditches) dug by hand centuries ago.

The painting process began with a study done on site. Back in my Santa Fe studio, I turned that study and photos of the scene into the final oil painting shown here.
