Procession from the Cathedral
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS LIVELY PAINTING “PROCESSION FROM THE CATHEDRAL”:
“Procession from the Cathedral” portrays a special moment during the annual mid-summer Spanish Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
On Saturday, artists from all around the state begin displaying their works around the Plaza.
On Sunday there’s a special Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, who is considered the city’s patron saint. Artists gather there to have their creations blessed. After Mass, the archbishop and a group of mariachis lead a procession for the artists.
I caught the action with my camera and a few quick sketches. Later, in my studio, I painted a fully developed watercolor that I named “Festive Celebration.” Even later on came this one, “Procession from the Cathedral,” my oil version of the lively scene

Santa Fe actually has many festivals during the summer. Indian Market is the largest and best known, attracting high-rolling collectors of Native American art from around the world. But Bernie and I always enjoyed Spanish Market more, because it emphasized families and artists.
