MARTHA MARKS NOTES ABOUT BERNARD MARKS’ BIG, SPARKLING OIL PAINTING “SUNLIGHT ON A MOUNTAIN STREAM”:
“Sunlight on a Mountain Stream” is one of my favorites among Bernie’s studio paintings. I remember the winter day he finished it and showed it to me, because I recognized the spot. Knew exactly where it was, because we’d picnicked there a few months earlier, when the fall was creeping in and it had looked very much like it does in this piece. Both of us had taken photos of it, too
This stream is a tributary of the Cimarron River in New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The closest identifiable locations are the historic town of Cimarron and nearby Cimarron Canyon State Park. Taos lies an hour away, straight down the mountain. Santa Fe is another hour on to the south.
The area around “Sunlight on a Mountain Stream” is a great area to camp, hike, and explore. Not to mention a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic… and to inspire a big, beautiful, sparkling oil painting.
