Sunset Watch at Sedona
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS STUNNING OIL PAINTING “SUNSET WATCH AT SEDONA”:
This view that I captured in “Sunset Watch at Sedona” shows a real-life scene that takes place almost every evening near the town of Sedona, Arizona. Martha and I enjoyed the scene too, and once we were back home in Santa Fe, I used my sketches and her photos to make this oil painting in my studio.
Sedona is one of the Southwest’s leading tourist destinations, in large part because of the gorgeous landforms that have drawn people here for thousands of years. Nearby are archeological and geological wonders preserved as national monuments: Tuzigoot, Montzuma’s Castle, Walnut Canyon and Sunset Crater. There are fine state parks, too: Red Rocks and Slide Rock. All are remarkable places, but it’s the landforms and the light that attract the greatest attention today.
Sedona’s famous “red rocks” are gigantic sandstone formations. At sunset, they reflect the sun’s glow in brilliant reds and oranges. When conditions are right, these reddish hues are mirrored in the clouds, exactly as happened on the beautiful evening captured in “Sedona Sunset.”
