Testing the Water

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS SWEET WATERCOLOR “TESTING THE WATER”:

“Testing the Water” works as a piece of artwork because children and water are an irresistible combination. They’re very fun to watch. Even more fun to paint.

After completing one landscape study in Slide Rock State Park, just outside Sedona, Arizona, I’d begun searching for a second subject. I spotted this scene as it was taking place beside a shallow pool. The children were having a great time on the natural slide formed by the slick rocks of Oak Creek.

There was too much going on at once for me to be able paint the scene on the spot. So I captured it with sketches and photos, which led to this final “Testing the Water,” done in my studio back in Santa Fe.

Two more of Bernie’s original paintings and/or prints from this area are “Sunset Watch at Sedona” and “Sedona.”
