The Persistence of Beauty

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS LOVELY PAINTING “THE PERSISTENCE OF BEAUTY”:

“The Persistence of Beauty” shows how special springtime is in Saguaro National Park, because that’s when the days and nights are still relatively cool and everything blooms.

Saguaro is located in Arizona’s Sonoran Desert near Tucson. It’s especially remarkable at this time, when all the cacti bloom. To me, at least, those beautiful flowers represent the rugged determination of life to exist in a hostile environment.

My oil painting “The Persistence of Beauty” is a study in contrasts. An old Saguaro cactus that previously flourished and bloomed has died and fallen. And yet, beauty endures in this dry, rugged land in the form of delicate fuschia flowers rising among the thorns of a prickly pear.
