View of the Río Grande from White Rock Overlook

BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF HIS WATERCOLOR SHOWING THE SPECTACULAR VIEW OF THE RIO GRANDE FROM WHITE ROCK OVERLOOK:

Many employees of Los Alamos National Laboratory live in the town of White Rock, New Mexico, whose very existence was top secret for decades. Nowadays, in addition to scientists and engineers, the area also attracts artists, thanks in large part to the famous White Rock Overlook, which offers a spectacularly long view of canyons, mesas, and the Río Grande.

I made this big plein air watercolor, “View of the Rio Grande from White Rock Overlook,” on a splendid spring morning. Fortunately, the wind wasn’t blowing as much as it would later in the day. I set up my easel right on the edge of the panoramic abyss, facing right (south). And that viewpoint wasn’t an easy choice, because there’s an equally marvelous one facing left (north). Fortunately, I had plenty of other occasions to face left making paintings like “Mesas.”

MARTHA MARKS ADDS: Bernie’s original large, spectacular watercolor painting is now available as a large, spectacular, and excellent giclée print. It was one of my favorites of all his landscape paintings, and I’m pleased to be able to offer it here as a fine print.

Excellent custom-made giclée prints on thick matte archival paper are available.
