West of Pedernal
After driving over the Jemez Mountains and down a country road, I was thrilled to spot this uniquely southwestern landscape. With so much color and geologic interest, it’s no wonder that New Mexico has long been a magnet for artists.
The purplish-colored mesa (in the background on the left) is Pedernal, one of Georgia O’Keeffe’s favorite subjects and one of the state’s most famous landmarks.
The original acrylic painting was sold to a private collector by an art gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
