White Sands Sunset
BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF HIS SPECTACULAR PAINTING “WHITE SANDS SUNSET”:
The first time Martha and I visited White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico, we were treated to a fabulous sunset. The cloud had loomed over us for an hour before exploding in shades of red, orange, and purple.
It happened too fast for me to do a plein air painting, but with Martha’s photos and mine, plus earlier sketches, I was able to make “White Sands Sunset” in my studio.
MARTHA MARKS ADDS:
I will testify to the accuracy of Bernie’s painting of this amazing sunset. I was trying to get it with my camera but the light was changing too fast and the contrasts were too great. His “White Sands Sunset” is a much better representation than anything I was able to capture.
On a later visit, Bernie painted ” Storm over White Sands,” which shows a less-dramatic but still beautiful sky with approaching storm clouds at what was by then a brand-new national park.
