Waterfall at Whitewater Canyon
BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS LOVELY “WATERFALL AT WHITEWATER CANYON”:
My large vertical painting “Waterfall at Whitewater Canyon” shows one of the many remarkable sights that one sees along a mile-long “catwalk” that winds through a narrow canyon in New Mexico’s Mogollon Mountains. It’s located in the Gila National Forest, near the Gila Wilderness, which was America’s first designated wilderness area.
The waterfall shown here drew my attention on my first pass along the narrow metal walkway suspended above Whitewater Creek. I walked the entire length but didn’t see anything else that excited me more, so I went back to “capture” it.
Given the narrow space and the fact that other people were coming through, it wasn’t possible to set up an easel for a full plein air painting on that spot. So I made sketches instead, and both Martha and I photographed the highlights of the canyon. Back at home in Santa Fe, I made the final “Waterfall at Whitewater Canyon.”
MARTHA MARKS ADDS: I don’t know of any other place quite like Whitewater Canyon. Not only is it beautiful, but the Catwalk makes it accessible to visitors despite its narrow width. When Bernie and I visited there around 2005, it was a magical place that we loved visiting, sketching, photographing, and painting. It’s correctly called the National Forest Service’s Catwalk Recreation Area.
“Whitewater Canyon” is the other finished piece that Bernie made from this no-longer-secret spot in western New Mexico. Both of them sold soon after he delivered them to his gallery on Canyon Road in Santa Fe. I’m delighted to be able to offer excellent prints of them on this website.
