Winter Rapids

BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF THE SWIFTLY MOVING WATER THAT HE CAPTURED IN “WINTER RAPIDS”:

In the fall of 2004, Martha and I were exploring back roads high up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. Near the tiny town of Red Cliff, a picturesque, long-ago mining camp just off highway US 24, we happened upon this fast-moving stream. The air was too cold for me to paint the scene on the spot, but still I was drawn to the water flowing freely toward us.

Adding to the charm was the early snow that clung to the tall pines in the background despite the wind that chilled us and kept the water flowing.

After a stop for Martha’s up-close photos and my essential sketches, I made this final “Winter Rapids” in my warm studio back in Santa Fe.

MARTHA MARKS NOTES: On this website, we offer 9 watercolors that Bernie made from that memorable trip: Above the Uncompahgre,“Aspen Shadows,” “Morning in Ouray,” “Mountain Color,” Mountain Stream in Fall,” Riding a Country Road,” Snowy Tracks,” “Winter Rapids,” and Vanishing Point in Colorado.
