Arches Vista
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ WATERCOLOR PANORAMIC “ARCHES VISTA,” SHOWING ARCHES NATIONAL PARK AND ITS ENVIRONS:
This panoramic painting captures a lot of the southern Utah landscape. It’s an unusual view as well. No stereotypes here. Artists usually focus on the spectacular rock formations inside Arches National Park. Bernie painted those too, but he also enjoyed the overall setting of the place. And that’s what he offers us in this classic watercolor.
Not only is it an unusual view, but it’s a striking one, too. There’s that dramatic round rock and patch of slickrock in the foreground. And the La Sal Mountains as the backdrop. I’ve never seen another painting of southern Utah that’s quite like it.
Bernie made this piece “live, on location” (ie, en plein air) as I hiked around, making my own photos from the same spot. I loved this painting at the time he made it. Somebody else loved it, too, and quickly bought it through Bernie’s gallery. I’m delighted to offer it here as a beautiful panoramic print.
