Arizona Sycamore
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ SPECTACULAR OIL PAINTING “ARIZONA SYCAMORE”:
Anyone who lives in the mountains of southeastern Arizona — or anyone else who has been lucky enough to explore those mountains — has seen this tree.
Well, maybe not this exact same tree, which Bernie and I discovered while hiking along a stream in a deep canyon in the spectacular Chiricahua Mountains within Chiricahua National Forest. But all the large, amazing Arizona Sycamores (Platanus wrightii) — with their thick, multi-branched trunks and smooth, exfoliating, and mottled white bark — are so special that, once seen, they simply cannot be forgotten. They’re beautiful in any season, but in autumn, when their leaves turn into the glorious orange shown here, nothing compares to them.
Bernie, of course, couldn’t wait to make photos and watercolor sketches of this fine specimen, and while he did that I walked on through the canyon with my camera. I came out with fun shots of Mexican Jays, and he came out with the raw material needed for this great painting, which he later made in his studio in Santa Fe.
