Aspens with Mountain Maples
BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF HIS STRONGLY VERTICAL “ASPENS WITH MOUNTAIN MAPLES”:
“Aspens with Mountain Maples” is a real scene. Cresting a mountain in southern Utah one fall morning, Martha and I came upon a stunning sight. Red maples lined the road, along with the yellow aspens normal in the western mountains. But maples are rare here, so we pulled off the road. Martha grabbed her camera, and I grabbed my sketching gear.
I made field studies and took photos. Back in my studio, I turned those into this piece and two other finished paintings, “Mountain Reds” and “Autumn Palette.”

This striking painting was one of ten worldwide finalists in an art competition that culminated in the December/January 2015 issue of International Artist magazine. Bernie’s painting was recognized there, among others from the US, Italy, Great Britain, Australia, and Canada. That kind of achievement was especially valuable since it came from a magazine for artists by artists from around the world.
We’ve enjoyed this painting in our home, but it’s now available for purchase here.
