Bernalillo

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “BERNALILLO” SHOWING THE SCENIC AREA NORTH OF ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO:

Bernalillo (pronounced ber-na-LEE-yo) is an old town located just north of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Interstate 25, aka I-25, carries thousands of visitors each year between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Most people go flying by. However, those who drive more slowly and take time to venture off the highway can discover both history and scenic beauty.

The history comes from Spanish explorers and conquistadores. In the middle 1500s, Francisco Vázquez de Coronado was the governor of the Spanish providence of New Spain. He was also an intrepid traveler searching for the legendary Seven Cities of Gold. He came to the area now known as Bernalillo and later traveled as far as today’s Great Bend, Kansas. Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Kansas is named for one of those cities that he sought but never found. There’s now a state historic site named for Coronado just outside modern-day Bernalillo.

In this painting, Bernie shows us a classic New Mexico landscape framing this historic site. Mountains. Mesas. Expansive skies. Sculpted cliffs. The Río Grande flows through here, too. Bernalillo is a bustling suburban city now, but looking at Bernie’s lovely watercolor, you sense what the Spanish must have seen when they first arrived.

NOTE: This is one of the very few finished paintings that Bernie did not sign. I suspect he wrapped it up, left the scene, and never realized it wasn’t signed. I will provide a statement of authenticity to any buyer of this print who requests it.
