Between Two Lakes

MARTHA MARKS NOTES ABOUT BERNARD MARKS’ GLOWING PAINTING “BETWEEN TWO LAKES”:

“Between Two Lakes” is an exquisite work of art that presents a series of mysteries to me.

First, I see only one small lake in this valley, plus a lazy stream meandering through a lush wetland. There’s no sign of a second lake, although it could be beyond the left side of the scene, just out of sight.

Second, I don’t recognize the location. That’s unusual, since Bernie and I traveled and camped everywhere together and I often hung around and watched him paint. Usually, I have my own photos of the spot.

Third, I have no idea if that brilliant sun is rising or setting. It could be either one, and truly doesn’t matter. Just makes me even more curious.

Fourth, I don’t recall ever seeing this original painting, and I found no record of it in Bernie’s files. So I have no idea how big “Between Two Lakes” was, or when he painted it, or which gallery sold it. I only discovered its existence after Bernie’s death when I was organizing his digital files and — voila! — found a good digital photo with that name on it.

Fifth, I can’t tell if the original “Between Two Lakes” is an oil or an acrylic. Doesn’t matter anyway, since the original isn’t available. But we can see the texture of a canvas under it, whatever the medium.

But still… “Between Two Lakes” is a unique, delicate piece that Bernie almost certainly made somewhere in Colorado. I love the morning sun radiating out into that valley, so I’m happy to offer it as a “Little Gem” giclée print.

This “Little Gem” giclée print on thick archival paper comes with a custom-cut white mat that fits into a standard 11″ x 14″ frame.
