Black Canyon of the Gunnison

BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF HIS MYSTICAL PAINTING “BLACK CANYON OF THE GUNNISON”:

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in Colorado is an amazing place. I’ve seen grown people moved to tears as they stand at the edge and gaze into its unbelievable depths. And those birds that soar through it only add to that emotional reaction.

Over the eons, the Gunnison River carved a narrow gorge of black granite rock walls that are 2700 feet deep but only 40 feet apart at the bottom. With a length of 48 miles, the canyon was a natural barrier to land movement for Native Americans.

MARTHA MARKS ADDS: The owner of the gallery that sold this painting later told us that, before deciding to purchase this painting, the buyer had stood in front of it and cried. Apparently, Bernie’s watercolor brought out a similar emotional reaction in the buyer as others have also felt when standing at the edge of this stunning place. Or maybe that buyer had even been there himself.
