Bosque del Apache

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ VIBRANT “BOSQUE DEL APACHE”:

This beautiful painting portrays a national wildlife refuge in New Mexico that has long been a hang-out spot for me. As a wildlife photographer, I’ve spent entire weeks there without coming even close to getting bored.

What probably wasn’t so natural was for Bernie, as a painter, to become such a fan of the Bosque too. But he was a fan, and with good reason, because the combination it offers of close-up rippling water and wetlands and distant purple mountains is drop-dead gorgeous in every season.

The name is Spanish, as is common in the state of New Mexico. It translates as “Apache Woodland.” If the area’s original inhabitants were to return today, I suspect they would recognize this lovely spot in Bernie’s paintings.

When we were there, of course, Bernie always brought his paints and easel.

MARTHA MARKS NOTES: In all, 4 of Bernie’s beautiful from here are featured on this website: “Bosque del Apache,” “Bosque del Apache Early Color,” “Ducks in the Marsh at Bosque del Apache,” and “Sandhill Cranes at Bosque del Apache.”
