Bougainvillea on the Pacific Shore

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ BEAUTIFUL OIL PAINTING “BOUGAINVILLEA ON THE PACIFIC SHORE”:

Over the years, Bernie and I spent relatively little time in California. We did visit the great redwoods and sequoias. We spent two weeks in San Francisco and the Monterey-Carmel area. We drove Hwy 1, the glorious coastal road. But all that was before he was making great oil paintings like this. I know of only a couple of other finished paintings that he made from California.

This one dates from our spring 2013 trip to the coast. For several days we camped in Leo Carrillo State Park near Malibu and explored everything nearby. It was both our first and last visit there. We loved the bougainvillea that bloomed everywhere, but the massive shrubs along the coast were especially memorable.

Bernie took photos of this scene of the California coast and made a plein air watercolor too. He later made this big, spectacular oil painting “Bougainvillea on the Pacific Shore” back home in Santa Fe. I’ve always loved the marvelous way he captured the flowering bougainvillea and other plants around it, the lovely waves rolling toward the beach, and the overall beautiful coastal environment.
