Buckman Mesa

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ ATMOSPHERIC WATERCOLOR “BUCKMAN MESA”:

Buckman Mesa is a notable high-desert landform that rises between Santa Fe and the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico. River rafters and kayakers know it well, even if “ordinary tourists” do not.

More specifically, Buckman Mesa sits at the southern end of the Espanola Valley, an area with a variety of colorful scenery. Climbers to its summit enjoy magnficient views of the Rio Grande valley. And it‘s also a popular hiking and ORV area for locals, including landscape artists like Bernie Marks.

This sweet painting shows the unusual formation that makes the large Buckman Mesa stand out in its high-desert landscape. Rather than being perfectly flat, as most mesas are (note the more typical example in the distance), Otowi Peak, a volcanic cone at its summit, makes it unique.

It’s worth noting that Bernie’s “Buckman Mesa” was selected by an independent jury for inclusion in the 2006 book Plein Air New Mexico, produced and published as Volume One of The Jack Richeson Fine Art Series.

Before that, this painting and several of Bernie’s other watercolors were featured in the Plein Air New Mexico’s 2005 Invitational Show at Ventana Fine Art in Santa Fe.
