Canyon Road in Spring
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ COLORFUL WATERCOLOR “CANYON ROAD IN SPRING”:
People around the world appreciate Santa Fe’s Canyon Road for its fine art galleries and unique charm. That reputation is richly deserved.
But it’s also a great place just to be. Visitors and locals alike enjoy strolling Canyon Road, either alone, with friends, or with their dogs. Others (like me) take photos of the fine old adobes and colorful doors and hanging wisterias and lush gardens. But all who come there — whether for the first time in their lives or every single day of their lives — can be guaranteed to enjoy soaking up the timeless ambience of this essential part of “The City Different.”
Every season has its charms on Santa Fe’s Canyon Road, and I don’t take anything away from it in other times of the year. But Bernie and I always enjoyed the spring more than any other time of year. The air is sweet, perfumed by lilacs in gardens both public and private. Tulips raise their lovely heads from flower beds. Wisteria dangles over adobe walls. Summer’s heat hasn’t moved in yet, and winter’s snows are past. The entire area is bright and happy-making.
Bernie got it right in this painting. Springtime absolutely is the best time to be on Santa Fe’s Canyon Road.
