Canyon

BERNARD MARKS WROTE ABOUT HIS SPECTACULAR ACRYLIC PAINTING “CANYON”:

Many paintings on this website contain the word “canyon” in their titles. But this is the only one that I chose to simply call “Canyon.” Why did I do that?

Actually, I’m not sure. Maybe it’s because the rock shown here stands guard on the remote north rim of the stunning Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, so relatively few people ever see it from this side.

Or maybe it’s because that “opposite” side you see on the right — the more accessible south rim that spreads out atop the sheer blue-black dropoff — is where most visitors stand to gawk across the deep, narrow gap toward this dramatic rock.

Or maybe it’s because there really is no other canyon quite like this one, so it seems appropriate to call it that. Not even the Grand Canyon can boast of the kind of super-steep, blue-black cliffs that you see here.

Or maybe it’s because anytime you hang out around the Colorado towns of Gunnison or Montrose, and actually anywhere along the southern tier of that state, you’re likely to hear someone mention “the canyon.”

This is the CANYON they’re talking about.
