Capitol Reef Mosaic
BERNARD MARKS WROTE OF HIS INTRICATE PAINTING “CAPITOL REEF MOSAIC”:
I believe that “Capitol Reef Mosaic” is one of my best interpretations of spectacular Capitol Reef National Park. And that’s saying a lot, because there are myriad unbelievable painting opportunities in this spectacular place near Torrey, Utah. It’s loaded with cliffs and canyons. Slot canyons and arches. Scenic little corners and spectacular overlooks. Geologically speaking, Capitol Reef has it all.
To make “Capitol Reef Mosaic,” I set my easel up on the side of a primitive road and captured bright morning light on an amazing rock wall. It’s one of many remarkable locations spread out along what’s called the Waterpocket Fold, “a wrinkle in the earth’s surface” that was formed some 50-70 million years ago. It runs for 100 miles.
The entire park was once an undersea reef. That’s rather hard to believe when you’re there, trying to take in a hundred-mile-long mass of vividly colored, sculpted rocks.
