Chamisa and Asters

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ SEASONALLY EVOCATIVE “CHAMISA AND ASTERS”:

In “Chamisa and Asters,” Bernie captures the magic of a New Mexico landscape. Anyone who either lives here or visits here in August, September, and October has seen this scene. Everywhere you look at that time of year, gorgeous sweeps of yellow chamisa bushes bloom across yards, fields, and roadsides. Mixed with them, in a perfect color combination, are purple asters and other wildflowers.

The chamisa plants are also locally known as “rabbit bush.” That’s because cottontails and jackrabbits often hide in the shade of these big, tough, and beautiful plants. They’re also drought-resistent, so they grow wild and spread anywhere there’s a minimal amount of water to sustain them.

And of course, in “Chamisa and Asters” we also see two classic houses. They add the perfect accent to the painting and evoke many lovely residential communities around New Mexico.

Excellent custom-made giclée prints on thick matte archival paper are available.
