The Colorado at Lee’s Ferry

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ EXQUISITE OIL PAINTING “THE COLORADO AT LEE’S FERRY”:

“The Colorado at Lee’s Ferry” depicts a lovely spot that, for both historical and geological reasons, is also a remarkably fascinating place as well.

These days, it’s part of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, on the extreme northern edge of Arizona. This “Arizona Strip” is isolated from the rest of Arizona but close to Utah, both geographically and culturally.

In the nineteenth century, Mormon families who wanted to maintain their polygamous tradition after the federal government prohibited the practice found its remote location appealing.

Mormon patriarch John D. Lee, who led the Mountain Meadows Massacre of 1857, established and maintained the site. He and some of his family hid out here at a homestead they called Lonely Dell Ranch. Ultimately, federal marshals caught up with Lee near this spot and took him away for trial and execution.

Today, this spot is a peaceful place where rafters come to begin their travels down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon.

In all, Bernie made three finished paintings from the Lee’s Ferry area: “Lee’s Cabin at Lonely Dell Ranch,” “Paria Riffle on the Colorado River,” and “The Colorado at Lee’s Ferry.”
