Dancer in Waiting
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS WINSOME WATERCOLOR “DANCER IN WAITING”:
I honestly can’t say exactly when or where Bernie found this scene. But I’m sure he actually photographed it first. It just doesn’t seem like something one could anticipate and set up in advance to paint. Based on the costumes, it must have taken place at Spanish Market in Santa Fe. The group is probably about to perform on the Plaza. Beyond that, I have no idea.
I don’t know who bought it from Bernie’s Santa Fe gallery either. However, I have a hunch that it was soon brightening the bedroom of some young would-be dancer. That’s a good guess anyway.
And I don’t care, because none of these questions matter. What matters is that “Dancer in Waiting” is a lovely painting. And that it will make a lovely print to brighten the bedroom of some other young would-be dancer. It’s also a most unusual kind of painting to find in Bernie portfolio. Very special in both its subject and the way he treated it.
