MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ BIG, PANORAMIC OIL PAINTING “DESERT MORNING”:
Bernie’s big “Desert Morning” oil painting reminds me of all the happy days we spent in the Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona. While the entire area was magical to us, we especially relished the time we had to enjoy the preserved and protected areas that make up Saguaro National Park, Tucson Mountain Park, and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The latter is such a special place that it has been a national monument since 1939 as well as a designated World Biosphere Reserve.
Every aspect of the Sonoran Desert was special to us: its mountains and washes; its plants, birds, and other critters; its sunrises and sunsets; its clean, crisp air; its unmatched sounds by day and night. This masterful painting captures the serene feeling that we always felt when we camped and hiked there.
Sometime during the last two years of his life, Bernie made “Desert Morning” from his good stock of photos, sketches, and memories.
