Desert Reflections

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL “DESERT REFLECTIONS”:

“Desert Reflections” shows Sabino Canyon Recreation Area, an extraordinarily beautiful preserve in the Santa Catalina Mountains on the outskirts of Tucson, Arizona. Its most notable feature is a riparian corridor lined with Saguaro-covered hills, deciduous trees, and splendid rocks, all of which shimmer in the water in the autumn. Bernie caught the experience well in this lovely painting.

In our younger years, we hiked the mountain trails together. Inevitably, Bernie hauled his watercolor gear in a backpack, as I did with my cameras. But as we got older, we scrapped most of the load and settled for taking the public tram up the mountain and walking the whole way down to enjoy Sabino Creek close up. Our last time to do this was in fall 2019, about a year before Bernie’s death. I hold the memory of that particular outing deep in my heart.

And personally, I think “Desert Reflections” is one of the most beautiful paintings he ever made. Maybe the most beautiful ever.
