“Early Snow in Colorado” is one of my favorite “Bernie pieces.” If not my absolute favorite, it’s pretty darn close. I truly love it.
We’d been camping late one fall in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains — locally known as “the Sangres” — moving back and forth across the Colorado-New Mexico border. He made the original sketches and photos in preparation for painting it in his studio. And he did the same for other paintings-to-be, on both sides of the state line. But this big, vertical piece, “Early Snow in Colorado,” was the prize.
“Early Snow in the Sangres” is perfect. The water is perfect. The snow is perfect. The trees and rocks and light and mesa are perfect. The colors are perfect, as are the textures. It’s all absolutely perfect.
