Embudo Station

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ STRONGLY VERTICAL “EMBUDO STATION” ON THE RIO GRANDE IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO:

This place may look plain, but Bernie loved it! He repeatedly painted this property and the Rio Grande that runs alongside it (behind him as he stood painting this piece). This is the only one that shows the historic buildings in their natural setting.

Embudo Station, or simply Embudo, is located in northern New Mexico on the banks of the Rio Grande. Tourists taking the “low road” from Santa Fe to Taos drive by it, probably without ever knowing its significance.

These buildings are listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. They’re also part of a national historic district.

This notable area includes one of the stops on the famous narrow-gage (3′) railroad popularly called The Chili Line because its main cargo was chile peppers. (Google “chili line railroad” to learn more about it.)

From 1886 to 1941, The Chili Line ran 125 miles between Antonito, Colorado, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sixty years after its demise, in the early 2000s, Bernie Marks enjoyed hanging out at Embudo Station, making wonderful paintings such as this one and also The Low Road to Taos” and Rio Grande Medley.
