Fishing the Firehole River

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ CHARMING “FISHING THE FIREHOLE RIVER” FROM YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK:

During all our visits to Yellowstone National Park, Bernie always returned to this river.

It’s called the Firehole for an obvious reason. It smokes continuously. And yet, fishermen and -women always seem to be out there in the water, oblivious to the risks. We finally concluded that fishing the Firehole River must be extraordinarily productive.

And for Bernie, seeing people fishing in a scenic location like this meant one thing. He had to make a painting right then and there. Over time, he made several of them. Most of them are no longer available for prints. Fortunately, I do have a good photo of this one, so I can offer excellent prints of it.

I’m not sure exactly why, but looking at this plein air painting makes me happy. It reminds me of how many times — and how very much — Bernie enjoyed this one particular spot among all the other amazing spots in the vast Yellowstone National Park.
