Fishing the Pecos
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ EYE-CATCHING WATERCOLOR “FISHING THE PECOS”:
Bernie loved the Pecos River. He painted it more often than any other single location anywhere. And every one of those pieces was unique. He never fell into a stylistic rut.
The Pecos River is one of three Wild and Scenic Rivers in northern New Mexico and the closest to Santa Fe. That’s one big reason why Bernie enjoyed it so much. He could get there quickly and easily.
The Santa Fe National Forest sprawls across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It’s a popular recreational area, offering many camping and sporting opportunities. Fishermen especially enjoy one campground on the banks of the Pecos River.
Look closely at this painting. You’ll see that Bernie not only signed it but also noted the year, ’03. That was our first full year living in New Mexico, so there’s a good chance that this was the first plein air piece he ever did on the Pecos River.
(And BTW, this is also one of only two dated pieces on this site. The other one is “Village in Winter,” an “Early Bernie” watercolor that he painted in Wisconsin. It’s dated ’72.)
