Forest Lights
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “FOREST LIGHTS” FROM THE SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS NEAR SANTA FE:
Bernie spent many happy days painting in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains that loom above Santa Fe, New Mexico. And to the end of his life, the watercolors that he had made over the years in the “Sangres” were among his favorites. I suspect that’s because they reminded him of all those special times and places.
I know that “Forest Lights” was one of his favorites. He framed it and displayed it in our home for years before finally offering it for sale in a Santa Fe shop a year or two before his death.
I love it too. Love the colors. The lights and darks. The sloping ground and hint of a creek. I love the way Bernie handled the trees and the leaves and the rolling landscape.
This was one of the pieces we most enjoyed having in our home. And now, even though the original is no longer available, I’m happy to be able to offer it here. It makes a strikingly beautiful print.
