Great Basin View
MARTHA MARKS NOTES ABOUT BERNARD MARKS’ BIG, BRIGHT OIL PAINTING “GREAT BASIN VIEW”:
Great Basin National Park occupies a remote stretch of eastern Nevada, near its Utah border. It may be America’s least known national park, and that’s a shame, because it’s filled with wonders. Explorable caves. A scenic drive that takes you well above the tree line. Never-ending views from that promontory. Some of the oldest trees on earth. And yet… hardly anybody ever finds their way there.
By sheer luck, we happened to find our way to Great Basin National Park in the summer of 2015, when everything was blooming. I’m so grateful now that we did, because I got good photographs from those great heights, and Bernie produced this gentle painting, which perfectly captures the soft feeling of the place.
That also turned out to be the last camping trip we made together, so there’s an emotional element for me, too, buried in the heart of this painting.
