HOODOOS

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “HOODOOS” FROM TENT ROCKS NATIONAL MONUMENT IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO:

Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument lies just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico off Interstate 25. It was a favorite spot for Bernie and me, with our love of intriguing natural places. We also appreciated locations with fascinating histories and unique “paintable” and “photographable” angles. Tent Rocks is one of those, for sure.

About 7 million years ago in what is now northern New Mexico, tremendous explosions within the Jemez (pronounced hey-mez) volcanic field deposited rock and ash across a wide area. Over time, erosion and weathering created cones of soft pumice and tuff, topped by harder caprocks. These hoodoos or “tent rocks” are very light in appearance. They actually look ethereal, even though they can vary from shoulder height to a towering 90 feet.

A climb to the highest point of Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument offers a view of one of the most unusual places in northern New Mexico.

Bernie made two watercolors from that same high vantage spot. To me, “Hoodoos,” “Tent Rocks” and “Tent Rocks Trek” bring back memories of lovely visits to that remarkable place.
