Bernie and I last visited Europe in 1998. It was a lovely finish to several decades of travel to our favorite locations abroad. But it was also notable as the only trip to Europe when Bernie took a full watercolor kit, not just his sketchbooks and pencils. He made several plein air paintings like this one from the whitewashed medieval village of La Cadière-d’Azur in Provence in southern France.
And unlike most of his other paintings, he not only dated them but also marked the place name. And then we framed it and kept it as a very-personal memory of our journey through the south of France.
This 1998 date falls right at the end of the “Early Bernie” paintings, so in many ways “La Cadière-d’Azur” is more mature than those he did earlier in his life. That designation comes with a special 25% discount on this website, as shown below.
