Lake Powell Overlook
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “LAKE POWELL OVERLOOK” FROM GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA:
Bernie and I first visited Lake Powell in 2002, which is when he made this watercolor. We were new to the Southwest and loving our initial explorations of places like Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The water in this famous reservoir was low, as you can see in Bernie’s painting.
As always, we sought out interesting, even unique, vantage points. This is a perfect example. We wandered around and ended up here. That persistence ultimately resulted in Bernie’s intriguing “right there on the edge of the cliff” perspective.
Here’s a nice additional story: In September 2019, almost 2 decades later, the National Park Service issued Bernie a personal invitation to serve as “Artist in Residence” at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. He had not applied for that position. It appears that the NPS was aware of his concentration on high-quality public lands in the Southwest and thought he would be an interesting candidate for this honor.
Bernie was 80 at that time, but he accepted the invitation and happily spent two wonderful weeks painting this area again. He considered it one of the highlights of his artistic life. I’m happy that Bernie found his way back to this magical spot to enjoy it one more time.
