Lamy Station
MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ DESOLATE-BUT-EVOCATIVE WATERCOLOR “LAMY STATION”:
Lamy is a small town south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its only real claim to fame ever is that a major train line used to stop there. Early on, in the heyday of the railroads, it was the famous Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe that kept this station busy. In 1896, the equally famous Fred Harvey built a prestigious hotel, the Ortiz, in Lamy.
These days, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe still does stop there, but the station doesn’t see much action and the Ortiz Hotel is long gone. The town of some 200 residents seems a rather forlorn place.
Bernie’s desolate but highly evocative watercolor captures that sense of better days gone by.
