Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ STREET-LEVEL “LORETTO CHAPEL IN SANTA FE”:

Over the years, lots of photos and paintings have been made of Santa Fe’s iconic Loretto Chapel. But not many have ever moved me like Bernie’s “Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe” when I found it as I was cleaning out his studio following his death.

Maybe it’s because for the last eight years of his life, we lived very close to this church and the intersection portrayed. We enjoyed a straight-on view of that chapel from our living room. We crossed that corner together many times… on spring days with late snow (as the painting shows), and on bright sunny days, and on rainy days, and on many evenings on our way to the theater or dinner with friends. That couple is us.

And this “Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe” scene itself is authentic, with a wee bit of artistic license taken, of course. This isn’t your typical tourist shot. This is an oil painting by a man who lived right there and loved the place. This is a glimpse of Santa Fe as Bernie and I experienced it in our final years together.
