Lower Falls of the Yellowstone

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ DYNAMIC “LOWER FALLS OF THE YELLOWSTONE”:

Bernie and I visited Yellowstone four times. He once wrote about this spot, known as the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone: “It’s the most breathtaking sight in Yellowstone National Park, which is definitely saying a lot.”

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is twenty miles long, up to 4,000-feet wide, and 1,200-feet deep in places. And there are several places in the park where you can view it from diferent angles.

Here, Bernie shows us the Lower Falls, which plunge 308 feet into the Yellowstone River. The yellow color of the craggy walls is the result of iron in the rock.

Bernie made this plein air watercolor on the spot at Artists’ Point. It was the piece from which he made his second painting of the same scene, an acrylic he simply called “Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.” Both paintings sold at his gallery almost as soon as he finished them.

This site also offers excellent prints of “Upper Falls of the Yellowstone,” another of Bernie’s beautiful paintings of the Yellowstone River.
