Mailboxes in the Snow

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ “MAILBOXES IN THE SNOW,” A WINTERTIME SCENE FROM NORTHERN NEW MEXICO:

Bernie had a way with little details, the kinds of things you tend to notice as you explore an area for the first time. This scene from northern New Mexico is an excellent example.

If you wander the back roads of what we used to call “the real New Mexico,” you see scenes like this almost everywhere. Maybe it’s the end of a dead-end neighborhood road. It could be an upscale subdivision. But the row of mailboxes is almost ubiquitous.

These days, unfortunately, the “row” tends to be a solid metal structure containing dozens of clustered boxes, providing more security for the mail at the cost of charm.

What makes this real New Mexico scene unique is the snow on the adobe walls. It’s a classic wintertime scene as you pass by on the rural road.
