Making Horseshoes on the Plaza

MARTHA MARKS COMMENTS ON BERNARD MARKS’ NOSTALGIC “MAKING HORSESHOES ON THE PLAZA”:

Santa Fe’s historic Plaza is a popular public space with near-constant activity. Some people come to walk their dogs and chat with friends. Others bring the kids and the grandparents for a family picnic. Artists show up to make and sell plein air paintings. Vendors cook and sell food. At special events, the space is filled with tents and exhibits. And sometimes there’s a demonstration of something truly unusual… like making horseshoes.

“Making Horseshoes on the Plaza” dates from the early ’00s. In it, Bernie displays his remarkable talent for catching the sense of a place and the people and activities found there.

Bernie never offered this piece for sale, but kept it carefully protected in his files. When I look at it now, I hear the smacking of a hammer on the anvil. I see the movement of people around the Plaza. And, of course, I relish that unmistakable ambience of Santa Fe’s historic plaza.
